LabXchange offers several immediate applications, including assisting local and state governments and laboratories in managing COVID-19 testing and future vaccine volumes.
PLYMOUTH, MA: FrontRunnerHC, a leading software company that assists healthcare businesses in maximizing reimbursements by providing automated solutions to verify patient information, recently announced the release of LabXchange, a new software solution. LabXchange offers several immediate applications, including assisting local and state governments and laboratories in managing COVID-19 testing and future vaccine volumes.
According to N. Myron Gunsalus, Jr., Director of Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories at KDHE, this effort is another illustration of the state’s dedication to public health and innovation. “Protecting the health of all Kansans is our highest priority. This new electronic order entry approach enables us to expedite the COVID testing process with confidence and provide more people throughout our state with the important results they need. Both the public and our healthcare workers will benefit.”
This vendor-agnostic electronic order entry system allows for the automatic capture and verification of patient information during a healthcare service or lab test. Nurses, phlebotomists, and volunteers can utilize LabXchange to register a patient for a COVID-19 test electronically. The software securely captures the patient information using embedded programs that scan a driver’s license or state ID and image capture of an insurance card utilizing mobile web browsers. Subsequently, it transfers the data to the client’s lab information management system via integration. The user can either read a specimen into the system or attach a barcode for transmission to contracted labs.
LabXchange helps remove erroneous, missing, or incomplete demographic and insurance information, as well as the paperwork, errors, and time involved in the process, by decreasing the need for manual entry of patients’ information. “Approximately 40 percent of patient demographic data has been missing from commercial laboratory test streams for COVID-19,” according to the Journal of AHIMA.
Apart from the delay at order input, another issue in the process is the enormous number of specimens entering the lab simultaneously, which can cause traffic congestion as patient data is manually examined. FrontRunnerHC CEO John (JD) Donnelly noted that “LabXchange not only helps streamline the process at the front end with order entry but also at the back end by helping to ensure that all the samples go into the lab with the right patient data.”
KDHE wants to make sure that COVID test results are shared with patients as soon as they are available, given that they have the opportunity to expedite the entire process. To do so, KDHE is using FrontRunnerHC's patient connection solution in conjunction with LabXchange to alert patients through email or text (SMS) when their results are ready and to allow them to view them immediately.
FrontRunnerHC worked with Gunsalus’ team and HORIZON Lab Systems’ team to adapt HORIZON LIMS; the Lab Information System Kansas has been utilizing to conduct their lab operations for the KDHE’s LabXchange deployment. Eric Dingfelder, President of HORIZON Lab Systems, commented, “All three of our organizations are committed to doing all we can to help curb the pandemic. The collaboration between us is creating powerful results. We hope to help others follow Kansas’ lead.”
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is now employing LabXchange to help speed up COVID-19 testing across the state, from densely populated urban areas to rural hot spot towns using mobile testing locations. Kansas expects to see a significant reduction in the time it takes to collect and process each test, and the risk of errors, once the system is implemented-excellent news for overworked personnel and individuals waiting in lengthy lines to be tested.
FrontRunnerHC is pleased that the solution is helping to alleviate the COVID situation. Donnelly commented, “From the start of the pandemic, we have been on a mission to help healthcare organizations manage the explosive COVID test volume. We are honored to help these healthcare heroes.”
LabXchange is a natural progression to FrontRunnerHC’s portfolio of software solutions. Donnelly stated, “Accurate patient demographic and insurance information is a crucial first step to ensure the rest of the process goes smoothly. Without it, healthcare organizations may forfeit revenue, incur unnecessary costs of rework, and waste valuable staff time, and patients can get surprise bills which often lead to dissatisfied referring physicians. We find the errors early and fix them.”
