Pathology plays a crucial role in enabling physicians to make informed decisions. By rigorously analyzing tissue samples, blood and bodily fluids to diagnose diseases and infectious agents, pathologists work closely with gastroenterologists to provide effective patient care.

Renowned for its excellence in pathology, Advanced Pathology Solutions (APS) upholds the value of collaboration between pathology and gastroenterology for precise diagnostics and personalized treatment strategies.

APS is a distinguished anatomic and molecular pathology lab accredited under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) of 1988. It offers laboratory testing services in gastroenterology, infectious disease, podiatry, molecular and anatomic pathology.

“We provide a comprehensive solution for all laboratory and pathology requirements within gastroenterology, acting as a unified umbrella,” says Nancy Davis, MD, director of pathology services at Advanced Pathology Solutions.

Powering the capabilities of APS is its powerful team of 13 pathologists who are making a transformative impact in comprehensive patient care. Comprising individuals with specialized fellowship training in gastrointestinal and liver pathology, the team has studied at top programs in the US, including Cornell, the University of Miami, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the University of Florida, the University of Alabama, Yale University and the University of Washington.

Doctors also earned additional subspecialty training in molecular, gynecological, breast and surgical pathology. This wealth of expertise positively impacts patient outcomes and powers APS to stay abreast of emerging concepts.

Pathology reports from APS are designed with patient care and communication in mind. Each report includes a gastrointestinal (GI) tract map, marking areas of concern with color codes. Pre-cancers are marked in yellow, inflammation is marked in blue and cancers in red. The report also includes a photograph of the biopsy tissue. This helps gastroenterologists quickly identify potential issues and make informed decisions. The informative reports also help patients better understand and visualize their conditions.

The reports from APS integrate with multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems including Athena or Express Scripts. This enhances patient care by ensuring pathology reports are seamlessly available in the EMR for review.

Pathologists at APS meticulously review endoscopy reports and patient history before closely examining biopsies. For instance, in cases where a patient reports abdominal pain, a gastroenterologist may discover the presence of a gastric ulcer and biopsy the area for evaluation. At APS, the process doesn’t end with diagnosing the ulcer. It goes the extra mile to determine the root cause. Pathologists attempt to designate a specific cause, such as helicobacter pylori, cytomegalovirus, iron-pill-associated ulcer, or malignancy.

APS also leverages advanced technologies and equipment to help make an accurate diagnosis. The multi-headed microscope at its facility enables experts to review challenging cases and debate emerging issues in GI pathology. It allows over ten experts to view a difficult biopsy at the same time.

APS is set to accelerate digital transformation by using AI tools for slide analysis and assessing genetic markers. These initiatives promise a more efficient and advanced approach to pathology. Digital slides will enable swift access to a patient’s biopsy history, eliminating the need for the physical retrieval of glass slides. The shift to digital pathology signifies APS’ commitment to staying at the forefront of evolving practices in the field.

At the same time, APS is earning accolades in the sector for its collaborative proficiency in gastroenterology.
